Java Developer

Summary

Citi is looking for a Java Developer to join the Data Security Identity Innovation team within Cloud Technology Services, where you will design and build microservice applications that drive automation and reduce operational cost across a global financial institution. In this role, you will play a direct part in modernising cloud-based identity services, translating complex engineering requirements into scalable, production-ready solutions. This is an opportunity to work on technically challenging problems with real business impact at one of the world's leading financial services organisations.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and deploy microservice applications using Java and Spring Boot, with a focus on automating manual processes and delivering measurable cost reductions across the firm.
• Build and maintain seamless integrations between microservices and existing cloud infrastructure, ensuring reliability, performance, and alignment with architectural standards.
• Contribute to the full development lifecycle for new features within the identity innovation space, from technical design and implementation through to testing and deployment.
• Collaborate with engineering and business teams to translate requirements into well-defined technical specifications and clearly articulate application and system processes.
• Implement solutions that meet audit and security requirements, working alongside information security teams to maintain compliance with applicable standards.
• Participate in code reviews and support the technical development of junior engineers, contributing to a culture of engineering excellence and continuous improvement.
• Evaluate technical decisions with a clear understanding of risk, ensuring solutions uphold the firm's standards for quality, security, and regulatory compliance.

Required Qualifications & Skills

• Hands-on experience in Java software development with deep proficiency in Core Java and the Spring Framework, including Spring Core, Spring Security, and Spring Data.
• Practical experience building and consuming RESTful and SOAP web services, with a solid grasp of microservices architecture principles and patterns.
• Competence across the core development toolchain, including Maven or Gradle for builds, Git for version control, and testing frameworks such as JUnit, Mockito, AssertJ, and Cucumber.
• Experience working with relational databases (Oracle, PostgreSQL) and NoSQL databases (MongoDB), and familiarity with logging frameworks such as SLF4J or Log4j.
• Demonstrated ability to containerise and orchestrate applications using Docker and Kubernetes, and to work within CI/CD pipeline environments.
• Experience with event-driven architectures using Kafka or equivalent message queuing technologies.
• Ability to manage competing priorities independently, take ownership of project components end-to-end, and communicate technical decisions clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.

Beneficial Skills & Qualifications

• Working knowledge of Python, enabling contribution to automation tasks or scripting where Java is not the primary tool.
• Familiarity with JVM performance tuning and application profiling, with the ability to identify and resolve bottlenecks in production environments.
• Prior experience working within financial services or another large, regulated, global organisation.
